Nemuro Peninsula
Casi Sites

Casi (Chashi) refers to fences or a fence line in the Ainu language. They were used for several purposes, including as fortresses, ritual sites and lookouts.
Twenty-four of the casi sites in Nemuro City are listed among the Nemuro Peninsula Casi Sites designated as a national Historic Site in Japan. The sites were also selected as one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan (entry no. 1), which was designated by the Japan Castle Foundation in 2006 .

Notsukamafu No.1 and No. 2 Casi Site

Located on top of a cape that juts out into Notsukamappu Bay, this site offers a panoramic view of the Sea of Okhotsk. Notsukamappu is also known as the birthplace of diplomatic negotiations between Japan and Russia, as the Russian merchant Shabalin arrived in 1778 to request permission to land there for trade purposes.

Onnemoto Casi

This site is formed by an embankment on a cape protruding from the western shore of Onnemoto Bay. This casi site is known for its nice shape: when viewed from the Onnemoto Fishing Port, it looks like rice cakes used for offerings. Click here if you plan on visiting.
