Nemuro Peninsula juts out into the sea, with the Sea of Okhotsk on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The seafood caught at the easternmost tip of the mainland is all fresh and has a taste that can only come from the farthest reaches of the sea.

Hanasaki Crab

This rare and precious crab is also known as a “phantom crab”. It’s said that the name Hanasaki crab (“hanasaki” means “blooming flowers” in Japanese) comes from the vivid scarlet color it turns when boiled, like a flower blooming. It’s characterized by its ample amount of meat, which is juicy and rich in flavor.

Nemuro Sardine Rolled Sushi

This is a new local delicacy for Nemuro. It was developed using Nemuro Shichisei, a brand of Japanese sardines produced in Nemuro.

Nemuro’s Fatty Saury

Nemuro boasts the largest catch of Pacific saury in Japan. The saury caught off the coast of Nemuro is so fatty that it is called fatty saury (toro sanma) and melts in the mouth.
