Wild Bird Sanctuary
In Nemuro, about 330 species of wild birds can be observed, making it Japan’s best sanctuary for birdwatching. Many of these birds, including the Blakiston’s fish owl, the white-tailed eagle, the Steller’s sea eagle, the black woodpecker, the bean goose, and the red-crowned crane, are designated as Natural Monuments or special natural monuments, and many birds can only be seen here. Even first-time visitors can try their hand at spotting these birds with a pair of binoculars on hand.

Shunkunitai Birdwatching
Known as the “miracle forest”, Shunkunitai is also a great place for birdwatching. It’s particularly worth a visit in winter when Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed eagles, and red-crowned cranes can be observed with more than 700 birds resting at once. There are also tours available.
Lake Furen Birdwatching
With a circumference of 96 km, Lake Furen is one of the three largest lakes in Hokkaido. It’s believed that the Ainu lived here in harmony with the area’s wild birds. It’s a great spot for observing numerous migratory birds.
Red-crowned Crane
The red-crowned crane is the largest crane in Japan. Its name comes from the red color on the top of its head.
White-tailed Eagle
These birds get their name from their white tails. Colonies of white-tailed eagles can be seen sitting on the drift ice in places such as the eastern coast of Hokkaido.
