Northern Natural
Flower Garden
Located on the way to Cape Nosappu from downtown Nemuro City, this 75-hectare wildflower garden overlooking the Sea of Okhotsk is a popular place to take a stroll with its well-maintained boardwalks. From early June to early August, the garden bursts into color with plants such as bristle-pointed irises, Nemuro dandelions, Ezo-Kanzos, and Canterbury bells reaching full bloom. It’s worth exploring this garden located in far reaches of Japan to see the various rare plants growing there.

Bristle-pointed Iris Plant Communities
This flower is a perennial herb in the iris family and can be seen growing in clusters at the Northern Natural Flower Garden. In Japanese, this flower has the same name as the Japanese cypress fan (hiogi), which is made by overlapping thin sheets of cypress and used to decorate the ornamental dolls displayed during Girls’ Day. It’s believed that it’s named this way because its leaves fan out in a similar way to the Japanese cypress fan.
Ponies Grazing
Ponies graze in the park as a form of weed control.
Mizunara Windbreak Forest
The mizunara windbreak forest was created to provide shelter from the strong winds blowing from the Nemuro Strait. The forest is designated as a Natural Monument by Nemuro City. You can appreciate the power of nature as you take in the mysterious sight of the tree trunks, which have been intricately bent out of shape by the wind.
